My artist

As i am getting a friend to sing my song, i have to find somewhere to record the song, so that the music is good quality, i planned to use the college's music departments facilities, however my friend has recently got a recording studio at home, and i now plan on doing it there, i plan to record the song over the weekend so it is ready for Monday, to make my anematic and starting putting my filmed parts together with the song, so i can edit the time of the filming.
Jay has a website of his own, with accoustic covers of songs he has song on, this was set up by himself.
http://www.reverbnation.com/jayoconnellmusic
Jay, lives in hull and is not well known as such, he does open mic. nights and some events at pubs and clubs. He also plays the guitar, so this is why i have chosen to do my song in an acoustic cover.

I believe the song rooftops, is expressing a relationship, were in which both the artist and someone else were in love, however it didn't work. I believe that he never wanted it too come to and end, although if he was to never see her again he would be alright with it because they had fun throughout their relationship and they are content with each other and how they came to end.
I am going to express my point of view of the song throughout my video. Maybe through narrative, as narrative is conventional to my genre. (acoustic)
When our time is up- this could represent something coming to an end. Eg. Relationship or Life.

When our lives are done- this again represents something coming to an end, however the 2nd person personal pronoun, 'our' could represent a relationship coming to an end as it could be a metaphor for life ending as the couple know it.

When we say, we've had our fun- this reinforces the ending of a relationship.

CHORUS
We're standing on the roothtops-being an action, i could show this in my video (someone being on top of a roothtop)

Everybody scream your heart out-emotional (conventional to my genre)
standing on the roothtops

Everybody scream your heart out
all the love I've met-emotional lyrics again conventional to acoustic genre. The abstract noun 'love' conveys feeling.

I have no regrets-Coming to an end?
if it all ends now I'm set- i could use a narrative through something ending. (narratives are conventional to acoustic music video)

Will we mark this time- 'we' suggesting a relationship.

Will we always say we tried

CHORUS
We're standing on the rooftops
Everybody scream your heart out
Standing on the rooftops
Everybody scream your heart out

Standing on the rooftops
Everybody scream your heart out
This is all we got now
Everybody scream your heart out

Standing on the rooftops

wait until the bombs drop-something bad needs to be un-covered?

This is all we got now-a slipt up, they both have nothing now?

Scream until your heart stops- relationship caused heartbreaks, therefore heart doesn't matter anymore

Never gonna regret

Watching every sunset-could show a sunset in my video at this time

We'll, listen to your heartbeat

All the love that we found-emotional

Standing on the rooftops
Wait until the bombs drop
This is all we got now
Scream until your heart stops

Never gonna regret
Watching every sunset
We'll, listen to your heartbeat- could show a heart beat wihtin my video
All the love that we found

Scream your heart out
Scream your heart out
Scream your heart out
Scream your

CHORUS
Standing on the rooftops
Everybody scream your heart out
Standing on the rooftops
Everybody scream your heart out

Standing on the rooftops
Everybody scream your heart out
This is all we got now
Everybody scream your
When our time is up

conventions of acoustic and alternative rock genre

My song is originally alternative rock, some bands that are of this genre include kasiban, muse and coldpaly.
Conventions include lyrics that tend to address topics of social concern, such as drug use, depression, and environmentalism, this is also a convention of the acoustic genre, My song will be song in acoustic. Dark clothing is conventional to alternative rock videos, this echoes the dull lightening that is also conventional to alternative rock music videos, dark clothing is used to express emotion, alternative rock videos usually convey unhappy emotion, that echo the lyrics of social concern, so dark clothing helps to convey this. Close ups of instruments, are used throughout alternative rock videos, this maybe to show that they artists play there own interments, or the may be used to stress the instrumental of the song behind the lyrics.

Tim O'sullivan et all argues that all media texts tell us a story, acoustic music videos do this through narrative this is because a convention of acoustic music video is, narrative, narrative is the structure of a story, as acoustic is not as high pace as other genres such as pop and dance, the narrative within acoustic video's ensures that the audience is still entertained. Kate Domaille believes that every story told can be fitted into the eight narrative types; it is mostly conventional for acoustic music videos to follow any one of these eight narrative types. This reinforces David Boswells argument that any theme may appear within any genre. The narrative within acoustic videos reflect the audiences lives, this creates a relationship with the audience and therefore the narrative reflects emotion, this echoes the cinematography used within acoustic music videos, as it is conventional throughout acoustic videos to show close-ups, this is so the audience is shown emotion through facial expressions, such as crying. To reinforce the emotion within acoustic videos another convention would be dull lighting, this is again to show emotion, and create feeling.
Also performance is sometimes conventional to an acoustic music video, this is because acoustic is the singer, with only a guitar, therefore by showing the artist performing with a guitar whilst singing (performing) it stresses the point that the video is an acoustic video. Also a music video is used to promote the artist, so by showing the artist performing it promotes them to their audience.

Editing such as, fades and cuts are conventional too an acoustic music video as they match the pace of the song, a fade is slow and soft, as is acoustic music, the cuts keep the audience entertained, as the video changes scenes. Another convention of acoustic music videos would be documentary style camera movement; this helps show emotion, as it conveys realism.

After looking at the conventions of the acoustic and alternative rock genre i have decided to make my acoustic music video, both conventional and un-conventional, this is because although i want my genre to be reconisile i also want my video to be interesting.

I could use  the social concerns that are conventional to alternative rock videos to create narrative, his taking conventions from both genres and allowing to to fit together. Instead of dark clothing that is originally conventional to the alternative rock genre, i plan to have my artist in casual clothes as this is conventional to acoustic, and with the song being song in acoustic form, it allows the song to be more laid back and relaxed, the casual dress will echo this. I plan to have close up of instruments as this is conventional to both acoustic and alternative rock genre, therefore i will be making my music video's genre recognisable to the audience.

convetions of music videos

Lyrics are a convention of music videos, lyrics within music videos reflect the narrative, and feeling of the video.

Editing and camera movement that fit to the beat of the music, for example sharp, fast cuts within a dance video.

The Artist is usually shown within the music video, a music video is a way of promoting the artist, therefore it is conventional to show the artist within the video.

Different music videos are influenced through different genres, eg. dance videos have dance routines within them. Genre effects mise-en-scene, cinematography, sound and editing.

Close ups of instruments are conventional of music videos as it shows elements of performance, performance also being a convention of music videos.

Narative is also conventional to music videos, as it provides entertainment for the audience, this also applies to absract and animation.

Pre production

For my music video i have decided to use the song 'roothtops' originally, by lost prophets, however i have decided to have someone from college to sing the song acoustically, i have chosen to do this because i think it makes the video more original. I want a narrative structure, with aspects of performance structure, as this is conventional to my genre of music video. The Name of my artist is Jay O'connell, this is the singer of the song. I want my video to be convetional to accustic music videos, as this will make it look more professonal.
Dallas green sings acoustic songs and stars within acoustic music videos. His acoustic music videos, are conventional to the acoustic genre, and therefore dallas green is going to act as influence for my music video. he names himself  'city and colour' Which comes from himself. Dallas whihc is a city and green which is a colour. Dallas green/city and colour palys the guitar and is a singer, he performes these talents together and this creates acoustic, folk music.

City and colours music video 'the girl' is an acoustic music video. This fits into my genre. First the audience is shown a close up of a middle of a guitar, close ups are conventional to acoustic music videos. The camera then slowly pans around the guitar to show a hand playing it, this shows the audience that the song is acoustic, as acoustic is singing to a guitar. The camera then cuts to a forest of skinny trees and it then pans again, the movements of the pans within the video fit to the beats of the song, as acoustic songs are slow, so are the pans shown within the video. We are then shown a medium close up shot of leaves, this set the scene, as does the forest, the leaves are also shown blowing to the wind, and the leaves are blowing at the same pace of the song. We are then shown the artist playing the guitar, and he starts to sing, this shows performance, performance within video promotes the artist. The camera then pans around again to show a long shot of a graffiti tunnel, where the man is performing on a tree stump. The camera then zooms out slowly to show all of the shot, we then see a women walk through the shot and past the man the women echoes the title of the song 'The girl'.

The camera then cuts to another setting and again shows the man performing; the lighting is dull within the scene. Dull lighting is conventional to acoustic music videos as it conveys emotion. The camera then zooms out from the man again, and shows two silhouettes walk down the steps in front of the room the artist is in. It shows a man and a woman, this could suggest the girl that the artist is singing about is now with another man. The camera then fades to show the celling of a different room again, the fade echoes the song, as the song is slow and soft, and the editing of a fade is also slow and soft. The room in which the man is in has a large standing mirror on the floor and old vintage ornaments, this suggests that the room is used for storage, the room also has a large fireplace, and this suggests he is an old Victorian house.

The camera then pans down to again show the man within a seat performing. The audience is then shown a close up of the side of the artists face. This shows the artist facial expression which therefore conveys emotion.

The camera again fades out to show three silhouettes walk through a door way, in which belongs to the room that the artist is singing in, the camera then moves closer to the artist, and again shows him performing whilst sat down. The camera then fades to the room the artist was previously in and shows two silhouettes walk past the door way again. The silhouettes that are shown throughout the video could represent a person passing his life by, which furthermore reflects the girl that he is singing about. The camera then fades back to the first setting of the forest, and shows the man performing sat down again, the guitar then fades out to a black screen, and the music stops.

The audience is then shown credits “city and colour the girl” and a guitar begins to play again, however the pace of the guitar is faster than the guitar played within the last scene, the camera then shows a tracking shot of a man walking through a hallway to a room were the artist is performing in front of many people. The contrast is black and white; this is conventional to acoustic music videos as it conveys emotion.

The camera then shows the two different situations together within one shot, with credits that say “vocalist/guitar” Dallas Green” then shows two different shots and different credits tat read  director/editor Marc Ricciardelli” these credits’ carry on for 60 seconds, credits within a music video promote different people throughout the music industry for example singers, directors, editors ect. It makes the music video almost like a film. After the credits the camera then shows a low angle shot of trees and the pace of the music goes back to before, the artist is then shown were he first started, performing again.

The Artist is shown performing sat down, this could be to convey emotion, by sitting down it conveys sad emotion, as it is not lively and happy, whereas standing or dancing would convey happiness. Also he is shown in a black jacket and black trousers, dark clothing could represent unhappy emotion also.
